Crystals
Crystals and the Human Body
Crystals have been valued by shamans in every part of the world throughout history. Because they act as amplifiers, they have been used to heighten the energy for healings and rituals. In the building of pyramids in ancient Egypt, crystals were the force that enabled the huge sandstone blocks to be positioned precisely. Also, the immense weight of the sandstone pressing of the granite base activated the billions of tiny crystals in the granite, thus creating a gigantic generator.
Natural crystals grow in the earth, under conditions of extreme heat and pressure. Silicon (as sand) and water are transformed into a six-sided crystal, called “fossilized water” in ancient times. The chemical composition is silicon dioxide, which forms twelve percent of the earth’s structure. Quartz crystals grow from a seed into a six-sided structure with horizontal striations. If melted, it will resume its hexagonal shape when it cools.
The human body is composed of microscopic crystals — in the bones, the blood, the urine — and there are DNA crystals in every cell. In fact, the one mineral you have most in your body is silica, so you are a moving quartz crystal. The tiny crystals in your body will begin to vibrate at the same frequency as the crystal you are wearing or holding. This is called entrainment.
Quartz crystals have an internal arrangement of atoms that is so orderly it acts as a stabilizer, while our energy fields are constantly fluctuating because of emotions, thoughts and outer influences. On the other hand, crystals vibrate at an unvarying frequency — this is why quartz watches, containing a thin slice of quartz, keep perfect time.
Radio, satellite communication, telephone and TV exist because of the “piezoelectric” properties of quartz, meaning that it produces tiny amounts of electricity when squeezed, heated or cooled. It is used in computers, optics, microphones, oscillators, sound resonators and all sorts of equipment used in industry.
Crystals store and conduct energy. They can even absorb one kind of energy and emit another when squeezed, heated or cooled.
Crystal chandeliers and wine goblets, on the other hand, are man-made. Sand and water are melted in a similar way, but at least 15% of lead is added for brilliance. The result is beautiful, but lacks both the atomic structure and the healing abilities of natural crystal.
Quartz amplifies the mind’s energy for any purpose, whether for mental clarity or medication.
Crystals can increase stamina and a sense of well being. They can connect the metaphysical mind to the physical body for healing and integrating. In fact, they can act as a bridge — either from mind to mind, mind to Higher Self, or mind to Universe.
For healing purposes, there are crystals that open a particular chakra, integrate the body’s electrical field, reduce pain, or aid the healing process after surgery. It’s important to understand that the crystals themselves are powerful tools, but it is you who make the choices and set your intentions through them.
Choosing a Crystal
Although crystals do not have personalities or egos, they are points of consciousness, rather like a wise and loving friend who wants to help. As with any tool, you are responsible for having the necessary integrity to use it for beneficial reasons. The crystals are for opening, enhancing and expanding your own mental, spiritual and healing abilities.
People may assume that they need the most powerful crystal, or the clearest one, but such a choice may not match the individual’s needs at the moment. The body, or intuition, is the best guide.
To find out if a crystal is beneficial for you, hold it in your left hand. Take a few deep breaths, be aware of your heart center, then curl your tongue so that its tip touches the middle of your upper palate. This joins the energy of the two major meridians, increasing your sensitivity. You may feel the crystal activate an organ or a part of your body. You may notice a shift in consciousness or feel a warm tingling in your hand. Give it a few minutes to speak to you in its own way.
Amethyst, citrine, smoky quartz, tiger eye and aventurine (green quartz) are all members of the quartz family. Each has a different vibration. It is very difficult to generalize their uses — for instance, one amethyst crystal may connect you to your Higher Self (traditionally, purple is the color of the spirit) while another may help digestion. Amethyst clusters help to pull out negative emotion, like a vacuum cleaner.
If you want to wear a crystal pendant, it can be banded in silver or gold — allow your intuition to guide you. Wearing a pendant helps to keep you centered, so that the moods of others won’t affect you.
Crystals make excellent pendulums as well. When you use one, be sure to take a few moments to open your heart center, then send the energy down your arm into the crystal. This prevents the ego from influencing the answer.
Clearing Your Crystal
Because crystals absorb and hold energy, they can get clogged with negative frequencies of anger, fear, or whatever you may be experiencing. Put your crystal in the sunshine from time to time, to clear and cleanse it. You can also make a mixture of two cups distilled water and one-fourth cup of sea salt. Add a splash of apple cider vinegar, too. Soak your crystals overnight. I would suggest doing the same with any gemstones you wear, but for turquoise, malachite, lapis, sodalite, or calcite, leave out the vinegar.
When clearing a pendant, keep it dry so that the setting doesn’t loosen. You can bury crystals or gems in a container of dry sea salt for a few days. Quartz crystals can also be cleared quickly by holding them under running water. Focus your attention on the crystal, visualizing any energy that is clogging the piece flowing out of it and down the drain with the water.
Some people have personal crystals which they don’t want anyone to touch, but I believe that everyone in my life reflects some aspect of me. So, whatever healing energy they receive by touching my crystals is also healing part of me. If you do feel uneasy about a crystal that others have handled, you can always clear it.
Additional Information
I have difficulty recommending books about crystals since so many writers have channeled information which was true for the channeler at the time, cannot be assumed to be True for everyone. One book warns against ever wearing tourmaline next to the skin — I love it next to mine! However, if you are having digestive upsets, leave your tourmaline at home.
The Magic of Precious Stones by Mellie Uyldert, Turnstone Press, Ltd., England, is a scholarly and well-done book. Another, which is delightfully clear, containing easy exercises to try with your crystals, is The Crystal Book by Dale Walker, Sarah Brown Press. Crystal Enlightenment by Katrina Raphaell, Aurora Press, New York, is well informed.
Although the suggested books are fun to read, you have your own source of knowing what is right for you. Trust Yourself!
This is a time of accelerated change, and the crystals will intensify whatever patterns are coming “to a head,” so that they can be experienced, understood and released. Above all, enjoy the beauty of the crystals, for beauty in itself is healing.
At New York State University School of Nursing, courses for using crystals along with therapeutic touch are taught and also used at the University Hospital. In the future, I believe that environmental crystals will be placed in waiting rooms, hospitals and clinics, to dissipate fear and support the healing process. We have only begun to explore the many ways in which crystals can be used to help us in our everyday work, healing and spiritual expansion.
